Arriving at Chiang Rai, our first visit was to Wat Rong Khun or the "White Temple," a vast extravaganza of kitsch, the building of which started in 1997 and not yet completed. The construction is funded by famous local artist-turned-architect Chalermchai Kositpipat, now a university professor of Art, who also has a gallery of his works on the site.
