Thekkady

21.-23.12.2013

On 21st December we arrived in Thekkady. My technical skills are so much in demand that I was requested to open a small business in town.
Das muss eine andere Ann sein.

Our new accommodation....
Unser Hotel-Aanavilasam

across the bridge

to a room with a pool (sadly not necessary at 1500 m altitude in winter)
Wir wurden schon wieder "upgegradet"

We have left Tea-land and arrived in Spice-Land. This region is especially famed for cardamon
 (in picture, cardamon in bloom)
Teeland ist auch Gewürzland(Kardamom).

and pepper, which is harvested in all its varieties (green, black and white)

caper tree
Kapernbaum

two varieties of coffee are also produced
Kaffee

nutmeg and mace
Muskatnuss mit Blüte.

Safari to the local national park. The name sounds very ambitious (it wasn't exactly teeming with tigers, though rumour has it that one is sighted from time to time)

Jeep drivers double as looker-outers, one hand on the wheel, one foot on the gas, with two eyes scouring the undergrowth for wildlife
Unser Fahrer hält während der Fahrt nach Elefanten Ausschau.

Famed for it elephants, this was the only success story the park could offer (courtesy of tele-lens)

The scene is set for our day's trekking
 Blick auf den Park.

Indian breakfast is provided by the park authorities at a camp kitchen.
Zunächst ein Frühstück...

From this vantage point we set off on a four-hour elephant trek. Sadly we have to say that we saw no elephants (only steaming dung and fresh tracks). The sole wild beast encountered was the Sacred Cow (below), all decked out with a bell like her Alpine equivalents.

Ants' nest on tree
 Baumameisen

Resting spot while our guides study the scenery for traces of elephant

The going was not easy...
Der Pfad war nicht immer einfach..

...we followed the course of a jungle stream, therefore the rocks were wet and slippery.
..wir folgten einen kleinen Bach im Dschungel..

Not everyone before us had survived the trek
.. es gibt hier Tiger und Leoparden..

Butterflies above the water
 ...Schmetterlinge..

Help was needed when scaling almost sheer rock face
..Steilstufen..

We struggled to fight off leeches (apparently salt is a deterrent, but it didn't deter too well)
...Blutegel und Salz dagegen.

After the jungle trek, a boat trip across a mountain lake...
Am Nachmittag ein Bootsausflug..

to this waterfall.
...zu einem nahen Wasserfall.

Compulsory attire for rowing boats - Indians come in smaller sizes...

Macaque monkey
Während der Heimfahrt- Affe im Baum.

Iguana
Leguan

Distant bison
Bisons

ditto, with tele-lens

Indian or Malabar Giant Tree Squirrel
Königsriesenhörnchen

Munnar

19.-21.12.2013

On 19 December we left Cochin and travelled inland and into the mountains to Munnar, in Tea Country. Below: waterfall en route to Munnar.
Wasserfall am Weg nach Munnar.

Our bungalow in Munnar (top balcony)
Unsere Hotelanlage (unser Balkon, oben links)

View from balcony to the town and surrounding tea plantations
Ausblick vom Balkon

It's Xmas in Kerala, with all the trappings except a safe source for tree lights

Xmas treat - dreadful local singer as an accompaniment to hotel dinner.

Tea, tea, as far as the eye can see.  Tea-growing only started here in the 1880s.

Visit to the Tea Museum
Besuch im Teemuseum

"Orthodox and green tea rolling roller" - machine was built in Belfast and has been functioning for 130 years (although now only for museum demonstration purposes). They knew how to build things in the old days. (By comparison: our high-class German washing machine lived for exactly 2 years and 11 months before the electronic died, and the machine with it).
130 Jahre alte Teezerkleinerungsmaschine gebaut in Belfast funktioniert noch immer.

The size of the tea leaves is varied by the amount of sieves they are filtered through - by the sixth (at the bottom) all that comes out is "tea dust." This is used in tea bags.

Drove up to Top Station and walked to the view point
Ausflug zur "Top Station"- früher Endstation einer Seilbahn.

Please note the Do's and Don'ts before venturing down the steep track to the view point.

Misty morning, Tamil Nadu
An der Grenze zwischen Kerala und Tamil Nadu.

Yet another "Three Sisters" - every country seems to have them (why are mountains never brothers?)

Opposite and barely visible - the highest tea plantation in South India
Vis-a-vis die höchste Teeplantage in Südindien.

Highest tea plantation
Hier mit Zoom.

Mountain reservoir
Wasserreservoir

Eucalyptus trees were introduced from Australia  as they provided fast-growing timber to fuel the tea factories

Flowering cherry trees, with dam
Staudamm mit blühenden Kirschbäumen im Dezember.

Visited Srishti, a welfare centre run by Tata for "the differently abled," handicapped children of workers on the tea plantations as well as their adult family members

Adults work at fabric dyeing.

From the kids' classrooms
Aus den Klassenzimmern.

The centre also has its own kitchen garden
Es gibt auch einen eigenen Küchengarten.

Driving across the plantations
weiter im "Teeland"

Tea pickers
Teepflückerinnen

Driving in India can be a death-defying experience

and there's never a dull moment on the road
manchmal wird es knapp...

When the action is exciting, everyone joins in
...sofort geben dann viele "Helfer" lautstarke Anweisungen...

but  there's always a happy end.
